Simple Ideas For Backyard Landscaping

For a very few homeowners, a front and backyard of just grass abutting up to their home's walls is enough. They like the simplicity and ease of maintaining their yard - just mow and go. But most of us like a bit of color. A walkway. Perhaps a trellis. Maybe a flower border. Something more than just a small patio slab left by the builder just outside the backdoor.

But then we think of the work involved. The cost. The planning involved.

"Maybe the idea of big grassy yards front and back isn't so bad," we might think. "Backyard landscaping, front yard landscaping just isn't for us.

But wait. Take a deep breath. Slow down.

Landscaping needn't be that difficult.

Take backyard landscaping, for instance. When you think of your backyard, you think of rest and relaxation, don't you? A sunny place for perhaps a barbecue. A warm spot on which to lie on a hammock, swing in the breeze, read a book and then take a snooze.

So keep it simple.

Here's a simple backyard landscaping idea: Why not install a flowerbed of blooming plants that attract butterflies? You can place it somewhat in the middle of your yard. It will become a focal point and just wait until your friends and neighbors come to visit! (Perhaps you'll want to have book on butterflies handy, see who can spot the most different kinds.)

For a truly simple design, why not "just" have a lovely patio, with shrubs and/or flowering plants along its edges? A good cement/concrete contractor can pour a patio in an oval, curved or just about any shape for you. Add some shrubs, plants and/or some solar patio lights would make a lovely - and simple and peaceful - backyard landscape for you.

Don't forget plants that are native to your area. Head to your nursery or do some research on the Internet to see what plants are native to your state. A simple Google search of, say, "Pennsylvania native plants" will give you a wealth of information. Choosing native plants give you peace of mind because you know they do well in your climate and therefore will be easier to take care of.

Place wood chips around your shrubs, trees and bushes. They cover up the dirt - thus giving your landscaping a more polished look - and they also help cut down on weeds. They also provide food as they break down and help keep your plants moist.

Finally, don't forget the lawnchair - the perfect addition to your backyard landscape. After all, now that your simple backyard landscape is done, it's time to put your backyard to its real use - a lovely spot for a relaxing snooze on a summer Sunday afternoon.

Landscaping Design

Landscape design plans help you visualize the end result of any landscaping project. Landscape design plans can be drawn using paper and pencil, design-planning software, or through a landscape design professional. One must be very clear about what is needed to be able to draw an aesthetically pleasing and practically viable plan.

The first and foremost task is to measure the land area that needs to be landscaped. After conducting a survey of the land, draw what features already exist on the land and decide if you would like to retain them. Take into consideration natural factors and features of the land, its slope, elevation, soil characteristics and climatic conditions. Then comes the designing part. Study all shapes, styles and themes that are of interest to you, and then choose what you like best. The whole land area can be divided into four main sections: open spaces, plant areas, paths and features. Incorporate the selected shapes, styles and themes in each of these areas. For example, if you are planning a circular landscape, are you going to have circular ponds, flower beds and pathways as well? Be aware of water inlet and outlet points on your land since you will need to install irrigation systems. Now draw these drainage, irrigation and lighting systems on the layout. Since it is difficult to visualize the design so easily, you can get help from software or draw it on paper.

Once the design is finalized, it is better to list what materials are required and the cost of each item. Then plan how much time you can devote for creating this landscape. In case you plan to get it done by professionals, this plan can serve as a base to start work. Since you know your needs the best, it is advisable that you plan the landscape design personally.

Ponds for Backyard

When creating a water garden you will need to choose from either a soft pond liner or a hard pond liner. If you are using a soft liner, your water garden or fish pond can take any shape you like such as square, round, oblong or just about anything else that you can think of. If you are using a rigid or preformed pond, you will need to purchase your liner already formed into the shape that you want your pond to be in. The best garden pond designs start with the liner and work their way outwards.

When it comes down to it, the shape of the garden pond is not what gives it its charm or character, it is actually the water plants, fish and the plants that surround the outside of the pond. In general, pond designs can be either formal and informal.

Formal pond styles have clean straight lines and geometric shapes and they often have rigid borders made of brick, preformed tiles or even rocks. Formal garden ponds can be used as reflecting pools so they are very calm and reflect the surrounding trees and flowers. You don't normally see this design of water garden in backyards.

Rectangles and squares are thought to be of formal styles and the more they are stretched to being oval, the more informal they look.

Informal garden pond design ideas have curving fluid lines that flow without defined edges into the surrounding gardens and vegetation. These designs have a more natural appearance and function.

Waterfalls are normally added to this type of design, while edging compliments the landscaping, which can be irregular and hilly. Using large rocks and river rocks on the bottom and edges of the pond makes it seem even more natural.

Rectangles are the easiest to install as they are easier to dig a hole for and when you use soft liners, you only have to make a few folds in the corners. Preformed ponds such as kidney shapes are even easier to install. The free formed design, where you define the shape by digging and then lining with a soft pond liner, are more difficult to install yourself. Depending on the shape you choose, you may need to buy almost twice as much liner than you think you will need. If you are installing it yourself, then it might be wise to avoid shapes that produce arms or very irregular design since it could be a nightmare trying to get the liners to fit.

Just remember to plan out your water garden before you start to build it. Make sure you know what shape you want the pond to be, and how much room your favorite rocks and plants will need so that your pond isn't cramped in a corner. Most importantly, plan some extra space for a chair or two so that you can enjoy your pond and all of the hard work you've put into it.
